> **Lady Madonna, children at your feet, wonder how you manage to make ends _meeet_!**

In March 1968, **The Beatles** roared back with a fresh single, Lady Madonna b/w The Inner Light (Capitol 2138), the last to grace Capitols iconic swirl label in the U.S. Dropped on March 18, just three days after its Parlophone R 5675 release in England, it caught the ear of a world still buzzing from _Sgt. Pepper_ (1967). **Ringo Starr**, the only Beatle back from their meditative Indian sojourn, faced the British music press with a grin: Weve been trying to make a rock and roll record for five years, he told _Melody Maker_ on March 16. Rock and roll has suddenly hit the headlines, the big revival, because this one is a rockera slight one, anywaypeople are saying its a rock and roll record.

Capitol leaned hard into the nostalgia, their full-page _Billboard_ ad that same day proclaiming The Beatles as a new rock and roll combo direct from Hamburg with the Mersey beat. It was a cheeky nod to their Cavern Club days, a deliberate pivot from _Sgt. Pepper_s kaleidoscopic haze. Lady Madonna wasnt a step backward but a bold sidestepproof The Beatles could still shake things up without losing their edge.

The track itself, cut on February 3, 1968, pulsed with raw energy. **Paul McCartney**, inspired by **Johnny Parker**s piano on Humphrey Lytteltons 1956 jazz hit [Bad Penny Blues](https://youtu.be/CC2zowixMyw ""), his left-handed piano playing, a gritty homage to **Fats Domino**whod cover [Lady Madonna](https://youtu.be/dwBoeoWDyo8 "") that same yearhammered out a rollicking rhythm on piano, with Ringo brushing the drums at producer **George Martin**s suggestion to capture that feel. Three takes later, they layered on Pauls Rickenbacker bass, John and Georges fuzzy guitars, and Ringo swapping brushes for sticks. Pauls lead vocal sealed the deal.

On February 6, they doubled down: Paul added another piano track and a second vocal, while John and George chimed in on the See how they run refrain and a vocalized brass bridge. Handclaps and a quartet of saxophonists**Harry Klein** and **Bill Jakman** on baritone, **Ronnie Scott** and **Bill Povey** on tenorgave the instrumental break a gritty punch. Pauls Fats Domino-inspired piano and Elvis-influenced delivery made it undeniably rock 'n' roll, so much so that even the King himself jammed to it in the studio.

Flipside [The Inner Light](https://youtu.be/sa3948JzWCc "") traded rock for Eastern mysticism, its sitar-driven calm a stark contrast to Lady Madonnas barroom roll. The singles picture sleeve, with the Fab Four in playful early-60s poses, screamed innocencea deliberate wink at their roots. In the U.K., Lady Madonna topped the charts, but in the U.S., it stalled at #4 on _Billboard_s Top 10, outmuscled by **Bobby Goldsboro**s [Honey](https://youtu.be/_pmZ2UYcpc8 ""), **Gary Puckett & The Union Gap**s [Young Girl](https://youtu.be/wdpJFWwNbGk ""), and **The Box Tops** [Cry Like a Baby](https://youtu.be/dmhtxLSUhYU ""). It still hit #2 on _Cash Box_, no small feat.

If anyone thought The Beatles were slipping, they were dead wrong. Lady Madonna was a bridge, a raucous return to form before the seismic shift of their next single. By summer, a new green apple label would herald [Hey Jude](https://youtu.be/A_MjCqQoLLA "") b/w [Revolution](https://youtu.be/BGLGzRXY5Bw ""), proving The Beatles werent just backthey were unstoppable.
