In March 1972, **Elvis Presley** was a man adrift, his heart heavy from his marriage with Priscilla falling apart. The King, once unstoppable after his 68 Comeback Special and 69-70 hits like Suspicious Minds and In the Ghetto, hadnt touched the Top 30 with his previous six singles. Producer **Felton Jarvis**, sensing the slump, pushed for a hit to reignite Elvis. At RCA Hollywood for a three-day session, Burning Love, a fiery track by Nashvilles **Dennis Linde**, was pitched. It had gone nowhere when initially recorded by R&B singer [**Arthur Alexander**](https://youtu.be/u8AHMp5Qhhw ""). But Elvis, lost in melancholy, craved ballads, not rock 'n' roll.

The sessions started rough. Elvis threw himself into the aching [Separate Ways](https://youtu.be/PW8EdOJaVSc ""), pouring out his soul, while Burning Love felt forced, and his heart wasnt in it. His bands electric drivetight rhythms, blazing energykept things alive. By Take 6, Elvis found his groove, ad-libbing the iconic a hunk, a hunk of burning love outro with a sly, lascivious edge. Elvis introduced the song live on his April tour, relying on a lyric sheet. Released in August 1972, the song blazed in, hitting #1 on _Cash Box_, #2 on _Billboard_s Hot 100, and Top 10s globally, selling over a million copies. It became his last Top 10 hit and highest U.S. chart of the 70s.
