**Elvis Presley** cut I Need Your Love Tonight during the evening-to-early-morning session of June 10, 1958his final recording session of the decade. Recorded in Nashville during a brief Army furlough, the one-day session yielded five tracks. Released on March 10, 1959, the song was paired with another furlough recording, [(Now and Then Theres) A Fool Such as I](https://youtu.be/KAOjUa0p2SA ""), forming one of Elvis most successful two-sided singles of the decade, following the double-sided Top 10 hit [One Night](https://youtu.be/SZoC3U9j22Q "") / [I Got Stung](https://youtu.be/-eSz23D6LXM ""). Written by **Sid Wayne** and **Bix Reichner**, I Need Your Love Tonight is a lean, guitar-driven rocker that lets Elvis cut loose.

Not everyone was sold. Manager **Colonel Tom Parker** disliked the sessions sound, feeling Elvis voice no longer stood alone at center stage. Elvis, on the other hand, reveled in the freedomespecially working alongside players like lead guitarist **Hank Garland**, whose bite and swing drive the track. With Elvis in the Army, there was little choice about what RCA could release if there were to be new singles at all. When A Fool Such as I and I Need Your Love Tonight arrived in the spring of 59, Elvis was out of sight, and questions about rock n rolls future were hanging in the air. A Fool Such as I answered loudly, hitting #1 on _Music Vendor_ and #2 on _Billboard_ and _Cash Box_. Elvis was still very much on peoples minds.

I Need Your Love Tonight later opened Elvis November 1959 LP _50,000,000 Elvis Fans Cant Be Wrong: Elvis Gold Records, Vol. 2_, cementing its place in his catalog. Following its hit run in 59 (Pop Chart Peaks: _Music Vendor_ #3, _Billboard_ #4, _Cash Box_ #6), the song returned to the stage during Elvis 1961 charity concertstwo shows at Ellis Auditorium in Memphis on February 25, and most famously on March 25, 1961, at the Bloch Arena in Honolulu for the USS Arizona Memorial benefit. That night marked Elvis final live performance until the 1968 Comeback Special. Wearing his gold lame jacket for the last time, Presley tore through a career-spanning set, driving the band hard and pushing the crowd into a frenzy. The show raised nearly $65,000 for the memorial fund and stands as a bookend to the rock n roll era Elvis helped defineone last night where the old electricity still cracked the air before everything changed.
