Little Sister - Elvis Presley

Very few singles to come would surpass the quality of this August 1961 release, with both sides penned by **Doc Pomus** and **Mort Shuman**. Little Sister is one of **Elvis Presley**s toughest, nastiest blues adaptations; Elvis snarls with easygoing defiance. During the June 26, 1961 Nashville session, the song evolved to a point where even its writers could hear what Elvis had made of it. Shuman later remembered that the demo he submitted sounded nothing like the finished record. Cut in the early hours that Monday morning, with a master achieved in twelve takes, this kind of creative spark would become very rare in later Presley sessions.

Little Sister is undeniably rock n roll. It really rocks. Backed with [(Maries the Name) His Latest Flame](https://youtu.be/CX7xNtQS5X8 ""), the double-sided Top 5 hit stands as one of the strongest contenders for Elvis best two-sided single of the decade. Too much Hollywood dulled that voice in the 1960s; then in the 70s, too much Vegas nearly smothered his comeback. Still, his medley of Little Sister and the Lennon-McCartney Get Back, performed onstage in August 1970 while playing his 1964 Gretsch Country Gentleman, is true rock n roll, Vegas stage or not. Among his live performances of the decade, that sit-down segment from the Midnight Show on August 12, 1970, captured by MGM cameras, sits right at the top.
